Robleh Ali is a Research Scientist at the MIT Digital Currency Initiative (DCI), and formerly manager of Digital Currencies at the Bank of England. At the DCI, Robleh’s main focus is on how fiat currencies can be issued digitally outside the existing banking system and the role of central banks in such a system. The overall aim of the work is fundamentally reforming the financial system by changing the way money is issued to determine how blockchain and distributed ledger technology can lay the foundation for a new financial system which is simpler, more resilient, lower in risk, and more open to all.He works on two projects at the DCI. One is how national currencies can be issued digitally outside the existing banking system and the role of central banks in such a system. The other is developing the ‘Cryptokernel’ blockchain toolkit and the educational materials to support it with the aim of increasing the number of software developers working on blockchain technology. Cryptokernel is a non-commercial, open source project. The goal of Robleh’s work is a financial system in which in which the rewards flow from the contribution made, the opportunity to make a contribution is widely shared and more people have influence over how the system works through the ability to build tools for themselves and others
