This paper reviews Bitcoin as a successful peer-to-peer electronic cash system while highlighting structural limitations that hinder rapid upgrades and long-term evolution. It analyzes Bitcoin’s key deficiencies and proposes technical solutions, arguing that new designs may be more effective than continuously patching the original system. Building on this analysis, the paper introduces CryptoNote as an alternative electronic cash model aimed at advancing privacy, flexibility, and competition in digital payments.
